On 26 November, Imran Khan announced that the PTI has decided not to remain part of the current political system and that they would resign from all the assemblies. He said, “We will not be part of this system. We have decided to quit all the assemblies and get out of this corrupt system.” He added that be meeting his chief ministers and the parliamentary party about the matter and would make the announcement about when the party would leave the assemblies. Additionally, he announced that the party has decided not to go to Islamabad to avoid any destruction or chaos.
CM Elahi extends support to Imran’s resignation calls
Chief Minister Parvez Elahi in support of Imran Khan said, “Punjab government is the trust of Imran Khan. We are chic people who don't leave what we walk with. When he resigned from the assemblies, Shahbaz Sharif's 27 km government will not be able to run for 27 hours. If Imran Khan asks the assembly to leave, it will not be a minute late.”
Government criticises Imran’s resignation calls
In retaliation to Imran Khan’s calls, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah stated that the PTI would not be able to dissolve the Punjab Assembly as a no-confidence motion was ready to be moved against the government. He said that once the requisition was made, the ruling party will not be able to dissolve the assembly. Additionally, he termed Imran Khan’s decision to quit all assemblies “admission of his failure.”
Similarly, PML-N leader Hina Parvez Butt claimed that everyone was now waiting for when Imran Khan to take a “U-turn on the resignations from assemblies.” He said that the announcement was just a “failed attempt to save face”
Meanwhile, Maulana Fazlur Rehman claimed that Imran Khan wanted to create a political and economic mess in the country through resignation from assemblies. He said, “Imran Khan could hardly assemble 10,000 people. He threatened to quit assemblies to destabilise the country on economic and political fronts, but his conspiracy would never meet a success.”
Meanwhile, the opposition in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has decided to take all constitutional and legal efforts to prevent the dissolution of the assembly.
